If you ask anyone at Sports Alive what makes our youth sessions work, they’ll say it’s trust. It doesn’t matter if we’re playing football in the park, doing creative workshops, or running structured programs; the most important thing is to develop real relationships with young people.
It might look like just kicking a ball or chatting over art supplies, but underneath, something much more important is happening. Young people are learning that this is a place where they’re truly listened to, respected, and safe. And that feeling of safety? It’s everything.
A lot of the young people we meet have faced instability or judgement in their lives, so creating a space where they can feel emotionally and physically safe isn’t just nice, it’s essential. When trust is there, young people feel comfortable opening up about what’s going on with them, trying out new things even if they’re a bit scary, listening to advice, and believing in themselves. Without that trust, it’s much harder for them to join in, behave well, or make progress.
But we don’t expect trust straight away. It grows slowly over time. It’s about being there every week, genuinely listening without judging, setting clear limits but yet being kind and open, and realising that every little interaction counts. A lot of the time, it’s in those quiet times, like going to the pitch or talking while cleaning up, that real connections start to happen.
And the impact of those relationships goes way beyond the sessions themselves. When young people feel seen and supported, they gain the confidence to take on tasks, ask for help, learn from mistakes, and succeed in all parts of their lives. For many, the trusted adult they meet at Sports Alive might be the first person outside their family or school who just genuinely cares about them.
Strong relationships like these are the foundation for everything else we do. They might not always be obvious or loud, but they’re in every fist bump, every smile, and every young person who comes back week after week. At Sports Alive, we’re not just running youth sessions, we’re building trust.
